Officer resigns after inmate escape

An employee of the privately run Burnet County Jail resigned after the Sunday escape of an inmate awaiting trial in connection with an April home invasion.

Nuana Antonio Fuentes-Sanchez scaled a drainpipe, got onto the jail roof and jumped over a fence Sunday night, said Adan Muñoz, executive director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, which regulates privately run prisons. In the latest reports, officials said they think Fuentes-Sanchez may have jumped on a train Wednesday in Kyle.

Jail officials Thursday would not release the name of the correctional officer, who was in charge of recreation, or say how long the officer worked at the jail or when the officer resigned. The jail is run by Southwestern Correctional LLC, Muñoz said. The officers who work there are not county employees, he said.

Officials with the Burnet County Jail and Southwestern Correctional declined to comment on the escape and the personnel matter when reached by phone Thursday. Burnet County Sheriff W.T. Smith wasn't available to comment Thursday.

The jail holds up to 587 inmates and has never had an escape before, Muñoz said.

Fuentes-Sanchez, 23, was being held in connection with a home invasion in the Stone Mountain subdivision near Marble Falls on April 14. He and several other men broke into the home, assaulted a man and woman who lived there and fled in a vehicle stolen from the couple, officials said. He told officers at the time that he was from El Salvador.

County Judge Donna Klaeger said Southwestern Correctional took over the operation of the jail in January. The company also was hired to manage the new $27 million facility, which opened in the spring.
