Garrido Held Jaycee Prisoner while Husband was Jailed

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) If the cops have it right, Nancy Garrido was the babysitter from hell: part nursing aid who knew well how to care for the young and old, and part demon who could kidnap a young child, stand by while her husband raped her, and then make sure she didn't escape while her husband went back to jail on a parole violation.

It sounds crazy, but cops say the 54-year-old woman spent years caring for her elderly, bedridden mother-in-law while Jaycee Lee Dugard was allegedly held prisoner in her backyard.

In 1993, when her husband Phillip Garrido went to prison for six weeks on a parole violation, who watched over the 13-year-old Dugard? Authorities say it was Nancy Garrido, the former nursing assistant, who kept the young girl imprisoned in a series of tents and sheds in the Garrido's backyard.

"You can reasonably infer from the charging document that the wife was doing that," said former U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott, who is acting as a special spokesman for the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.
