| Sheriff: Jail too dangerous for visitors |

Conditions at the overcrowded Jackson County jail are so dangerous that the sheriff won’t allow the media inside to see it or take pictures. “I’m not trying to be difficult and I don’t have anything to hide,” Sheriff Mike Byrd said. “It’s a safety issue. I’m afraid somebody could be taken hostage.” With 288 jail beds and an average daily population of about 420 inmates, corrections officers are hard-pressed to maintain control, Byrd said.
