Juvenile mental health programs face cuts

Nick Howell, 21, credits his time as a client at the Youth Services Bureau with helping him grow up.

The Crystal Lake native was court mandated to use the service after getting in legal trouble and serving 60 days in the Department of Corrections at 16.

“I more or less didn’t really see the benefit of it when I first came in,” he said. “To be honest, I didn’t really see the benefit until six months or a year after the program.”

Now, he’s clean from the court system and has a full-time job and college aspirations.

“It was definitely the staff that allowed me to believe I could succeed,” Howell said.
