| Arkansas lawmakers taking a look at prison |

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas lawmakers again will travel to a state prison after a series of high-profile incidents ranging from escapes to an inmate's near-death, but enthusiasm for investigating the system appears to be waning. A legislative committee led by state Sen. Bobby Glover, D-Carlisle, will travel today to the state's Tucker Unit, typically a routine trip for lawmakers to learn more about the state's 20-facility prison system. However, Glover said legislators are likely to have more questions about problems involving guards who watch over the state's 15,000 inmates. In recent months, two convicted murderers escaped by donning guard uniforms and walking out the front exit of a state prison. Guards were fired or disciplined over the near-death of an inmate left naked and covered in his own feces for a week. A man also was shot to death after guards say he tried to flee a contraband checkpoint outside a prison. Glover said the prison system and its seven-member governing board should be more open about problems at the prison.
