Religious center to open at correctional facility

After years of planning, raising money and lots of praying, the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough will finally get its own religious center, thanks in part to the support of many churches in Alamance County.

For decades, Alamance/Orange Prison Ministry has been providing the funds to pay for a chaplain at the facility. And for at least 15 years, the ministry has been working on getting a religious center at that location, said Chaplain Ken Barker.

On Wednesday morning, they will be one step closer to accomplishing that goal as they hold a groundbreaking celebration at the minimum security prison at 2110 Clarence Walters Road in Hillsborough.

“It is going to allow us to offer more programs and services for the guys,” Barker said of the center, which will be called The Peace Center.

Burlington resident Anne Steele, 65, a member of the prison ministry’s board, is happy to finally see the project becoming a reality.

Throughout the years, she said, she has seen the project evolve from a $10,000 metal building to a $250,000 building comprising 3,500-square-feet.
