| Judge would name Asure's replacement if she becomes warden |

If Donna Asure becomes permanent warden at the Monroe County Correctional Facility, her successor as commissioner will be appointed by county President Judge Ronald Vican. The prison board meets this morning and may take up Asure's application for the warden job. Asure, a Republican, was re-elected to the three-person commissioners’ board in 2007. But she lost her position as commissioners chairwoman with the election of Democrats Suzanne McCool and Theresa Merli in the same race. The last time there was a commissioners vacancy was 2002, when Vican appointed his one-time law partner — Robert Nothstein — to the position. Nothstein went on to win election in 2003 to a full four-year term. But Nothstein lost his bid in 2007 to a second full term. Asure expressed confidence that Vican will select a strong successor if she succeeds in becoming permanent warden. She called Nothstein a strongly opinioned commissioner who was dedicated and capable. Asked what she would say to people who voted for her and expected her to serve a full term, Asure replied, “I have always been grateful to the people who put me in office.” Asure said the opportunity to be warden has evolved as she took on challenges at the jail sparked by a 2006 prison sex scandal, with four previous people serving as warden since 2007. “In my mind I can make a difference,” she said in a phone interview from the Snydersville facility. “I’m excited about doing so.
