An ex-fugitive who sparked a massive manhunt after escaping from Santa Clara County's (Calif.) main jail five years ago is alleging an officer manhandled and threatened him this week. Peter Allen Flores said an officer roughed him up Tuesday night in an apparent retaliation for his highly publicized 1999 escape from maximum security, an incident that exposed weakness at the facility. At the time, he was the first prisoner to escape from the jail, which opened in 1988. A hearing in that case is scheduled for Monday. During an interview today at the Main Jail South in San Jose, Flores said the officer had applied handcuffs too tightly, causing his hands to go numb, and slammed him against a wall twice. He also said the officer told him, ``This is not a threat, but a promise: You better watch yourself or you're dead.''' He did not seek any medical attention after the alleged encounter. Department of correction spokesman Mark Cursi could not comment on Flores' allegations and said the incident was under investigation. Flores, 31, returned to Santa Clara County in January after serving a prison sentence in Nevada, where he was captured in 2002. In 1999, while awaiting sentencing on local drug and firearms convictions, Flores sawed through window bars at the main jail and climbed down a rope of knotted sheets. When authorities found the former Milpitas man in Reno, Flores attacked an officer and was later convicted on a drug charge there. |
