Judge Mace Baxter Thurman Jr., whose commanding presence on the bench, high standards for lawyers practicing in his court and compassion, even for criminal defendants, marked his more than a half-century as a Travis County jurist, died early Tuesday of lung disease at an Austin assisted living facility. He was 91. Thurman, who became a justice of the peace in 1941, a county court-at-law judge in 1947 and a state district judge, handling mostly felony cases, in 1957, faced an election opponent only once. He retired in 1990 but continued to hear cases as a visiting judge for more than a decade. Along with former Judge Tom Blackwell, who died in 2005, Thurman's name graces the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center, which opened downtown in 2000. "He was a giant," said state District Judge John Dietz, who was assigned to work in Thurman's court as a young prosecutor.
