A 28-year-old inmate died Saturday at the California Rehabilitation Center after being found unconscious in his dormitory bed, authorities said. Officials were investigating the death as a possible homicide. Officers at the medium-security center in Norco were notified by another inmate about 3 a.m. that the San Diego man, who had been at the center since March 4, was not breathing. He could not be revived, said Lt. Timothy Shirlock, a center spokesman. The man's identity was not released pending notification of his family. Shirlock said the cause of death was being investigated. But one state senator who spoke with center administrators said the death might be linked to a drug deal gone sour. The death "appears to be inmate-on-inmate," said state Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, who chairs a prison oversight committee. "The theory right now is one inmate ... apparently strangled the other inmate due to a drug debt." J.P. Tremblay, a spokesman for the state Youth and Adult Correctional Agency, would not comment on Romero's statement, citing the investigation. Shirlock said the death was listed as a suspected homicide but added, "We don't have any theories at this point." |
