KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Zion man shot while allegedly attempting to rob a Kenosha jewelry store has been identified as Vernon Fields, who is also wanted by Waukegan police for a home invasion and shooting.

Vernon Fields, 29, is under police guard in the intensive care unit of the Kenosha Hospital and Medical Center. He underwent surgery Wednesday.

Kenosha police detectives will be recommending charges of attempted armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Kenosha authorities said Fields is also a suspect in a home invasion and shooting that occurred in Waukegan on Sept. 4. Waukegan police on Thursday would not release any information on the home invasion and shooting, or where it happened.

Fields and another suspect allegedly entered the Jewelry Exchange at 2400 52nd St., Kenosha, around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday with partially concealed faces and confronted the 55-year-old owner. The owner drew a handgun from under a desk and shot Fields once in the chest.

Both men fled around the corner to a waiting van, but Fields collapsed on the grass and was caught by police, who also recovered a .44 Magnum revolver in the grass nearby.

The second suspect and getaway driver have not been located and their identities have not yet been determined. The incident remains under investigation, Kenosha police said.
