WATSONVILLE -- Richard Eddie Campos' male relatives sat together under a large shade tree in their yard Wednesday morning, sipping Coronas and staring at the spot just outside the chain-link fence where the 21-year-old gang member was gunned down the night before. The men -- his younger brother, father and a handful of cousins and uncles -- said little. Campos was a good man, a cousin started to say, but broke down in tears and turned away. Police said they have few leads in the killing, the city's fourth homicide this year. Three of the slayings have gang ties. "It's not looking very promising right now," Sgt. Saul Gonzalez of Watsonville police said Wednesday. "We need someone to come forward and help us out." Campos was cleaning his car, a red coupe parked in front of his family's home on Roache Road at Carey Avenue, around 9:45 p.m. when he was shot, said Vanessa Lara, a family friend. He dove for cover inside the car, then tried to flee by running around the back of the car. But he was hit twice in the torso and fell in the gravel on the side of the road. Campos was pronounced dead at the scene. On Wednesday, there were still blood spots in the gravel, a used latex glove and two gauze pads behind the spot where his car had been parked. Read More. |
