A Missouri inmate in prison threatened a federal judge in Nebraska with death in a letter that contained a white powder the inmate claimed was anthrax, prosecutors said.

Jeffrey Phillips of St. Genevieve, Mo., was charged Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Nebraska with threatening a federal judge and mailing a threatening letter to the judge.

Phillips, 37, mailed a letter containing white powder in mid-July to the office of Senior Circuit Judge C. Arlen Beam of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Jan Sharp of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Omaha said Thursday.

The letter claimed the powder was anthrax and included threats against the judge and his family, including the statements "Enjoy your anthrax," "You are dead," and "Your kids are dead," the indictment said.

Beam said Thursday that he hadn't heard or reviewed a case involving Phillips, and as far as his office could determine, Phillips had had no dealings with the 8th Circuit.

"Perhaps he got my name out of a law book in the prison library," Beam said.

Sharp said he could not disclose details about why Phillips may have targeted the judge. Phillips could not immediately be reached for comment. The Missouri Department of Corrections lists one inmate by the name of Jeffrey A. Phillips, age 33, who is serving a six-year sentence for forgery in the South Central Correctional Center in Licking, Mo.
