| Criminals use caller ID to scam |

Technology has made it possible to fool caller ID by disguising the origin of a call, and criminals are using it to scam people. One possible target: Advertisers in newspaper classifieds. In some cases elsewhere in the country, criminals called people pretending to be from the newspaper, claiming they needed their credit cards again to keep their ads running. It's referred to as caller ID spoofing. Scammers use software programs to make it appear as if they are a legitimate business, making the name of a legit business or person appear on the caller ID screen of the victim's phone. The technology has been around for a long time and had been used by private investigators and the like, and some scammers. But now easy access to the technology has made the fraud more prevalent. Businesses and their customers, including newspapers, are being targeted. At least one newspaper elsewhere has run into this problem, according to Lee Enterprises, the parent company of the papers in Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon. Someone had been calling classified customers and telling them their ad has been canceled. When the customer asked why it was canceled, the scammer transfers them to a colleague who then gave them an excuse such as a computer error and asked the customer to provide the credit card information to keep the ad running.
