Madoff's prison a target venue for Moore

If Michael Moore had his way, the next screening of his newest documentary, "Capitalism: A Love Story," would be at the Butner (N.C.) Federal Correctional Complex - better known as Bernie Madoff's new digs.

"We're just trying to see if we can set that up in the prison he's in," the director said at the film's Lincoln Center premiere Monday night. "If we can't, we've discussed doing an outdoor screening in the field, so at least he can watch through the bars of the window."

The flick centers on the financial crisis of 2007-2009, the changeover of administrations and the economic stimulus. (Click here for a review.)

Why the proposed screening? Moore says it's important to him that it be seen by the Ponzi-scheme ringleader, who does not appear in the film.

"Bernie is representative of the scheme of capitalism itself. [Capitalism] is a pyramid where the richest 1% have as much financial wealth as the combined 95%. It's a pyramid only a few people can be at the top of, and everyone else is made to believe that they can get to the top," he explains. "It's a bit of a ruse, and a ruse that's not unsimilar to Mr. Madoff's."

A rep for the Federal Bureau of Prisons insists that the director hasn't made his request for a Butner screening just yet - but that if he did, he'd have to go about it just like anyone else. "Mr. Moore would have to submit a request directly to the institution for their consideration," the flack said.
