SPRINGFIELD -- The Quinn administration is not rethinking a plan to release 1,000 nonviolent inmates in the wake of the murder of a Piatt County woman over the weekend. Ronald Schmidt II had been out of prison for just four months when he was arrested Saturday in connection with the death of his mother-in-law, Penny S. Hendrickson, 51. Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman said an intensive review of Schmidt's criminal profile shows he would not have been eligible for the program had he still been serving time. "He would not have met the requirements," spokeswoman Januari Smith said. The union representing prison guards said Schmidt's alleged actions underscore the pitfalls of an early release program. "The Schmidt case clearly demonstrates the difficulty of predicting how any parolee will behave after they are released," said Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union. Schmidt, 27, was sentenced last November to two years in prison stemming from a car theft conviction in Macon County and 18 months in prison in connection with a drug possession conviction in Moultrie County. He was released on parole May 29 after serving about six months of his term. His arrest in connection with Hendrickson's murder came one day after Corrections Director Michael Randle announced a plan to release 1,000 inmates as part of a budget-cutting move. Randle has emphasized that those being released would be non-violent offenders. Read More. |
