Grand Forks County's jail administrator says he is working to prevent a repeat of mix-ups that led to the release of prisoners by mistake. Administrator Gary Gardner said a clerical error led to the mistaken release of one prisoner, facing a terrorizing charge, for several hours last month. He said the prisoner was back by 4 that afternoon. Another prisoner, Jeremy Burdick, was set free earlier this month after he was taken from Grand Forks County to Traill County for a court appearance. He faced a number of charges, including reckless endangerment and terrorizing, and was sentenced to the state penitentiary. Traill County Sheriff Mike Crocker said his deputy was not told to keep Burdick in custody. Burdick was arrested a week later in Grand Forks, Gardner said. "I'm not saying it was Traill County's fault. I'm not saying it was anybody's fault," Gardner said Wednesday. Gardner said a third prisoner failed to return from a 48-hour pass and was arrested when he showed up for a court appearance. While not all of the incidents can be blamed on the jail, Gardner said additional training is planned. |
