| Prison job fair should be popular |

Even during tough times, jobs are available in prisons. The Federal Bureau of Prisons will have a job fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Rochester Community and Technical College. It's advertising dozens of open positions at correctional facilities from Leavenworth, Kan., to Sandstone, Minn. "Bureau of Prisons North Central Region is seeking medical and correctional professionals looking for a challenging, rewarding and unique career," according to a news release. Even if it does involve working behind bars, the fair should be popular. There are 10 unemployed people for every job opening in southeastern Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Prisons are a growth industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth for correctional officers is faster than average and job opportunities are "excellent." The analysis projects 82,000 more correctional officers, or an increase of 82 percent, between 2006 and 2016. "Mandatory sentencing guidelines calling for longer sentences and reduced parole for inmates are a primary reason for historically increasing incarceration rates," according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, though it says budget woes are leading some states to reconsider mandatory sentencing guidelines.
