A jail inmate accused of killing a Polk County correctional officer will go before a judge today on several charges, including first-degree murder.

Inmate Terrence Barnett is charged with murder in the death of Polk County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Ronnie Brown.

Brown died earlier this month from an injury he suffered while trying to restrain Barnett on Aug. 30 at the South County Jail in Frostproof.

Sheriff's officials said a murder suspect, Terrence Barnett, 28, broke the sprinkler head in his cell, causing a flood of water. When Brown and another sergeant entered the cell to remove Barnett, the prisoner hit Brown and shoved him into a wall.

Brown fell to the floor on his back. Brown was treated for his injury and sent home but soon could not move. He later died at Winter Haven Hospital.
