Prison needs more cameras on inmates

PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Putnamville Correctional Facility said it needs more cameras, because the current ones are not covering all areas where the inmates live.

Prison officials said there has been a spike in violence in recent months between staff and inmates.

"Officers have to go back and forth, so if they're on one side they can't obviously supervise what's going on on the other side," Assistant Superintendent Phil Slavens said.

The prison currently only has nine cameras that supervises four housing units holding thousands of inmates.

Prison officials said it's impossible for officers to see everything. Especially for the one or two officers covering several large areas.

"Staff members can not see all the dorm room and see the day room area, see the latrine areas and the office areas at one time," Slavens said.

Prison officials said having additional cameras in the dormitories can help stop any violence from happening there.
