Salinas's top cop emerged from a crime summit Thursday with the reaffirmed support of state and federal authorities in the city's fight against gangs. "To get this many top law enforcement executives and agency heads in one room, in our town to discuss our issue, it was historic," said Police Chief Louis Fetherolf. More than 100 law enforcement officials — from federal, state and local agencies — met for eight hours at the National Steinbeck Center to identify resources and develop a coordinated effort in fighting violent crime in Salinas. Fetherolf declined to discuss specifics of what kind of support the city can expect. "Each agency has its own expertise, its own assets," he said. "I'm not going to reveal what we're going to be using, except to say, as we need it, they say the help is there." Participating agencies at the summit included the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Monterey County District Attorney's Office, the county Sheriff's Office and the county Gang Task Force. The governor's "gang czar," Paul Seave, director of the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention program, and U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello also attended. The conference comes two weeks after Salinas' 22nd homicide of 2009. On Sept. 10, a 14-year-old boy was shot to death in the 1000 block of Rider Avenue. Read More. |
