| Mohican juvenile facility to close in 2010 |

COLUMBUS -- To curb a budget reduction, the Ohio Department of Youth Services will close a third juvenile correctional facility within the next fiscal year. Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility in Perrysville will close, department spokeswoman Kim Parsell said Friday. The substance abuse treatment center is for male offenders ages 13 to 21 who have a documented alcohol or other drug problem and at least a six-month prison commitment. The closure announcement comes on the heels of a dispute between youth services officials and court monitors. In the continuing case S.H. v. Stickrath, a special inquiry report was filed with federal court after the closure of Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility and Freedom Center. The monitors' report says youth services closed the two facilities too quickly and without enough planning, causing increased violence in the six remaining juvenile correctional centers. Read More. |
