Lois Fraley, the corrections officer who was held hostage in a prison tower for more than two weeks and who credits Corrections Director Dora Schriro with saving her life, is urging state senators to confirm Schriro's nomination to the post. Last Tuesday, Fraley sent a letter to Senate President Ken Bennett, R-Prescott, and the 29 other senators asking them to confirm Schriro, whose job could hinge on her handling of the nation's longest inmate hostage standoff. Schriro, who was appointed by Gov. Janet Napolitano, can serve until June 12 without being confirmed. "I believe I owe my life to Director Schriro," Fraley wrote in her letter. "She has the corrections background and wisdom not only to run one of the largest agencies in the state, but also simultaneously negotiate a hostage crisis with few or no tools from the State." Fraley, who was held by two inmates inside a watchtower at Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis near Buckeye, told reporters she wrote the letter because she feels the Senate isn't moving fast enough to confirm Schriro. Bennett said he is appreciative of Fraley's request and that he is waiting for the findings of pending inquiries of the hostage matter. Otherwise, he said, the confirmation would revolve solely on her role in the high-profile incident. |
