Col. Alan Stahl resigned Friday as director of the St. Charles County Department of Corrections. The same day, County Executive Steve Ehlmann announced he selected Larry Crawford, former Missouri Department of Corrections director, to replace Stahl. Crawford was slated to begin his new duties Oct. 5, pending approval. Crawford's appointment, which needed approval from the County Council, was included on the agenda for the council's meeting Monday night, after Journal deadline. If approved, Crawford was scheduled to begin his new duties Oct. 5. Stahl led the county jail operation for 14 years. He will receive pay and benefits for 30 days plus compensation for accrued vacation. "We'd like to thank Col. Stahl for his years of dedicated service to the residents of St. Charles County, but we felt it was time to move in a new direction," Ehlmann said in a news release. In an interview, county spokesman John Sonderegger said the decision to change directors came after Ehlmann's review of the department. "(Ehlmann) reviews each department periodically, and during the review, he decided he wanted to go in a different direction," Sonderegger said. Five inmates committed suicide in the county jail in the past three years, the last one in April. In June, the jail opened a new cell block for suicidal prisoners and began new policies aimed at preventing suicides. Crawford was the state corrections director from January 2005 through January 2009 under former Gov. Matt Blunt. He was the fifth director to lead the state corrections department since it became a cabinet-level position in 1981. Read More. |
