| Police killer's prison records to be released |

MONTGOMERY - The Alabama Corrections Department will comply with a state Supreme Court order to release records of an inmate who died soon after beginning a sentence for killing two Athens police officers. Corrections Department spokesman Brian Corbett said the decision not to seek a rehearing came after department legal counsel conferred with Alabama Attorney General Troy King and the state District Attorney's Association. The case involves an open records request by Mary Barksdale, of Athens, whose son, Farron Barksdale, died days after arriving at Kilby prison near Montgomery in August 2007. The department argued that inmate records were private, citing inmate privacy and prison safety issues. In a Sept. 18 decision, the Supreme Court ordered release of Barksdale's records, citing 1923 state open records law and a case involving Consolidated Publishing Co. law that "represents a long history of openness" for Alabama.
