Nelles property draws interest

WHITTIER - Bad economy or no, it appears there's strong interest among developers in the now-closed Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility.

More than 50 people - most of them developers - showed up Thursday to an informational session and tour of the 73-acre facility that was closed in 2004 after 113 years of operation.

"All of the usual suspects are here," said Billy Chen, chief executive officer for Irvine-based Land Co. Development Resources Inc.

The number of people surprised state officials.

"We weren't expecting that kind of turnout," said Jeffery Young, spokesman for the state Department of General Services.

"We're hoping we get some good offers," Young said. "We want to see this property developed."

Young said the department was expecting only about 20 people to show up.

The state is now seeking offers for the property with a deadline of 5 p.m. Nov. 20.
