Prisons close, inmates and staff are shifted

Neighboring counties and correctional institutions are feeling the shift as one facility shuts down and the other absorbs a little bit more.

Union County Correctional Center is one of seven minimum security prisons locking its doors after state budget cuts have forced them to shut down and move inmates elsewhere.

“They’ve all been dispersed throughout other prisons in the state,” said Jim Rowell, program supervisor at Union County Correctional.

Many of those inmates were part of a work-release program in which those serving longer sentences can begin piecing their lives back together a few years before their release. Through state contacts, they are assigned outside jobs, like factory and production floor positions and can earn paychecks which are deposited into a trust fund, according to Sgt. Terry Harris at the Anson County Correctional facility.

Several of the inmates displaced from the Union County facility have been uprooted and sent to Anson County’s minimum security institution.

The Anson County institution has a little over 300 inmates and 63 positions on staff.
