| Nonpartisan panel supports jail lawsuit |

Sheriff Timothy B. Howard and County Executive Chris Collins blamed politics after the state Commission of Correction sued the sheriff over conditions at the Erie County Holding Center. Howard and Collins have nothing good to say about the U. S. Justice Department’s lawsuit, either. But they generally suspect that with the state’s lawsuit, collaborators in the Democratic-controlled state government are out to embarrass the Republican sheriff as he seeks re-election this year. After all, aides contend, the lawsuit hit just six weeks before Election Day. Another group, however, one famously nonpartisan, has studied conditions at the Holding Center and Correctional Facility for several years and believes the state commission has done the right thing. “The League of Women Voters of Buffalo/Niagara supports the filing of a lawsuit,” the League said in a statement last week. “The purpose of the suit is to compel the county to operate its jails in a safe, stable and humane manner, as required by law. We agree with the commission that this lawsuit is an ‘unfortunate but necessary’ action.” The League, which studies important public issues to educate the electorate, did not dive into its jail research overnight. Since 2004 it has compiled Commission of Correction reports, analyzed assorted studies about the Erie County jails and interviewed dozens of women after their release, said Therese Warden, a registered nurse with a doctorate in anthropology who led the study group.
