Jail Escape Attempt Becomes Campaign Issue

"This place is poorly managed. These people are poorly supervised, they're poorly trained and they're poorly equipped," says Glascott, "He (Howard) wants to continue to blame the least common denominator -- clerks and deputies -- for his failure to manage the correctional facilities adequately."

Sheriff Howard says a deputy's mistake led to Sunday's escape attempt. "This is a result of a human error on the part of one deputy," said Sheriff Howard. But, that answer is not good enough for the sheriff's opponent. Captain Glascott points out that the escape attempt comes on the heels of other recent incidents of inmates being released by mistake. The sheriff's office has blamed those on clerical errors.

"Those are his responsibilities to make sure the men and women working for the sheriff's department have those tools, and they're well supervised so this stuff stops happening," says Glascott.
