| Killer to spend rest of his life in prison |

Elroy Tillman, a former death row inmate convicted of bludgeoning a man with an ax and setting a fire to cover the crime, will spend the remainder of his life in prison. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole announced its decision Monday -- 7½ months after Tillman, 74, received a parole hearing. In announcing its decision, the parole board listed 10 aggravating factors against him, including denials that he committed the crime. Just two mitigators were listed: his good behavior in prison and the possibility that federal authorities might seek to detain him after release. Tillman's attorney, Loni DeLand, said Tillman was "still digesting" the board's decision on Monday. DeLand said his client had hoped to leave prison and help an adult son who has special needs. "He is over 70," DeLand said. "It's not like he's a danger to the community." Tillman in 1983 was convicted of murdering 28-year-old Mark Schoenfeld in Salt Lake City. Tillman originally received a death sentence, but the Utah Supreme Court vacated the sentence due to information not disclosed to defense attorneys. Read More. |
