MADISON TWP., Mich. - Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land took a detour through the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility on her way to visit her agency’s Adrian branch office on Tuesday. Land and her staff were escorted by Michigan Department of Corrections officials through a factory on prison grounds where about 1.3 million Michigan license plates are stamped out each year. The head of the agency that licenses 9 million vehicles and trailers said she was impressed with the operation. After the tour, Land expressed support for a bill in the state Senate that would eliminate yearly sticker tabs. Instead, the aluminum vehicle plates would be replaced every five years. The bill so far has all the features requested by the Secretary of State’s office, she said. One of the co-sponsors, state Sen. Cameron Brown, R-Fawn River Twp., is one of the candidates seeking the Republican nomination to replace Land in next year’s election. Land, who is prevented by term limits from seeking another term, was tapped by Michael Bouchard to be his running mate if nominated for governor.
