The Miami Dade Children’s Trust resoundingly answered critics with a daylong ‘cradle to prison pipeline forum’ at the University of Miami Clinical Research Center. There were questions regarding the effectiveness of the Children’s Trust. And questions regarding how the money is being spent. Participation and results pretty much silenced the critics during a variety of individual forums that allowed input from participants. “We’ve got to see the urgency of the problem,” said Adora Obi Nweze, president, Florida State Conference NAACP. “This (forum) has the potential to be great. People coming together. We need to change things. The recent spate of teen violence and murders signaled a dire need to address these issues. And with the violence came arrests and the public alarm. Hence, the forum brought together a diverse array of participants from a broad range of professions, including the clergy. Their interests and purposes varied. “What we can see is a lack of balance in budgeting the state attorney and public defender. We need to re-balance the money. It’s a waste of money. We’re locking people up without any rehabilitation or training to re-enter society. They come out years later having graduated to hardened criminals,” said Charlie Johnson, a regional coordinator with the Miami Dade County Council of PTA, who was a panelist. Read More. |
