| Many inmates shouldn't be there |

Recently, recommendations were made regarding Montana's correctional budget and future needs. According to a panel, growth in the prison population is expected to overtake available space. Therefore, consideration is being given to the expansion of current correctional facilities to accommodate this growth at the projected price tag of approximately $300 million. I would hope that before our state makes such a commitment, we would analyze the current inmate population and ask ourselves who truly needs to be incarcerated. I think this is an important question as corrections is one of the largest expenditures in our state's budget. In tough economic times, we should ask ourselves if this is truly the best possible way to expend our resources. I would answer this question with a resounding "NO!" I would like to be clear that my opinion has absolutely nothing to do with violent crime; society has a vested interest in removing the murderers, rapists, and hardened criminals from our communities in order to protect itself. Unfortunately, vast majorities of the population under the custody of the Department of Corrections are not violent or dangerous, but those who suffer from the disease of addiction and have allowed this disease to dominate their lives to a point that they made poor choices and now find themselves in a place they never would have imagined. I, for example, was an inmate at Passages, a facility in South Billings near the Women's Prison that houses those eligible for treatment or community placements, such as pre-release. I was there because I was convicted of fraudulently obtaining dangerous drugs, a felony offense — essentially prescription fraud. Read More. |
