Detainee transfer debate heats up

The impending shutdown of the Standish Maximum Correction Facility, leaving 300 people without jobs in one of the most economically devastated parts of the state, has both sides of the Guantánamo Bay issue clamoring to get the upper hand in the debate.

Officials in Au Gres and Arenac County passed resolutions Tuesday supporting the transfer of the detainees to Standish in order to minimize the economic impact of the closure of the prison. The Standish City Council is expected to vote on a similar resolution Thursday. Another item on the agenda is a proposed 40% hike in water rates because of the loss of prison revenue.

"We'll be losing $36,000 a month in water and sewer revenue and losing some excellent families who live in our community," said Standish City Manager Mike Moran. "Our council has been in touch with the community for the last several months, and we're getting a lot of positive reaction to keeping the prison open."

But opponents are to be at a forum at Rochester High School at 7 p.m. Monday. The group chose southeast Michigan for the forum to gain visibility for the issue.
