The widow of an inmate who hanged himself by his shoelaces in January in the Warren County (Va.) Jail has filed a $10.35 million negligence lawsuit against Sheriff Danny T. McEathron and seven deputies. Thomas Lee Short Sr., 68, of Front Royal, hanged himself after being placed alone in a cell after being arrested for violating a protective order obtained by his wife, Mary Short. The hanging was captured on videotape by the jail's security cameras, according to the lawsuit filed last Friday in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg. "Mr. Short died as a result of the deliberate indifference and failure to act by the jail staff at Warren County Jail," attorney Blair D. Howard said in the lawsuit, which also alleges that McEathron failed to train the jail staff and provide adequate safety procedures for detainees and inmates. McEathron declined to comment on the lawsuit, but said he stands by a statement he made after an investigation into Short's death--that jail staff didn't contribute to the death and had no knowledge that he was suicidal. |
