Two N.J. prison inmates, including a man who would have become eligible for parole in two weeks, walked away from work detail last Monday in Warren County and were captured about six hours later, authorities said.
The pair -- Ross Link, 23, and Mark Hanis, 25 -- were among several inmates cleaning a scenic overlook off Interstate 80 in Knowlton Township, said Matt Schuman, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
Schuman said officers noticed the inmates were missing between noon and 1 p.m. when they put the crew on a bus to do a head count after a lunch break.
Schuman said both men were taken into custody at 6:15 p.m. by state police and Department of Corrections personnel near Route 46 and Interstate 80 in Columbia.
State and local authorities were hunting for the two men with the assistance of K-9 units and a police helicopter.
Both men are serving sentences at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Clinton Township.
Hanis, who would have become eligible for parole June 2, was convicted of theft by deception in Middlesex County while Link is serving an indeterminate term for two robbery convictions in Ocean County.
Schuman said the two men could face an additional three to five years on their sentences.
