Significant improvements have been made at the Monroe County Correctional Facility during the past year, according to an annual state Department of Corrections inspection. State corrections officials privately interviewed staff and inmates at the Snydersville jail during a three-day period in August, according to the report released Tuesday by the Monroe County Prison Board. They also inspected prison facilities. Only one deficiency was cited by inspectors. "Dayroom carpeting throughout the facility was observed to show severe wear which prevents proper cleaning," inspectors wrote in a report summary. The county is seeking competitive bids to replace the carpeting with rubberized flooring, at an estimated cost of $200,000. The report notes that since the previous inspection in 2008, a contractor has installed a new roof, water softener system, chiller, interior lights and mattresses. New video monitors, inmate phone monitoring system, officer radios and officer uniforms have been or will soon be added, they wrote. "The 'governing prison authority', the prison administration and the staff of the Monroe County Correctional Facility are to be commended for presenting a noticeably improved physical plant," inspectors wrote. "It was reported, by the prison administration, that all of this work took place since March, which makes this an even more commendable achievement." Read More. |
