Prisons switching to wood-burning boilers

Even the Big House is going green.

The Indiana Department of Corrections will unveil a wood-burning broiler at Pendleton Correctional Facility Wednesday.

The prison is the first of four that will replace their coal-fired broilers. The environmentally friendly heater will burn scrap wood, like palettes, instead of fossil fuels.

The wood will be bought from local businesses, which could help fuel the regional economy, IDOC officials said.

The IDOC anticipates saving $36 million in energy costs over the next 10 years.

Prisons in Plainfield, Westville and Michigan City are also scheduled to make the switch.
