Cumberland County (N.C.) authorities have arrested an inmate mistakenly released from the county jail May 13. Roger Wayne Collins as arrested last Monday around 2:20 a.m. at a house in Shanon. Collins is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Facility on a $2,000 bond. Collins, 52, had been jailed since May 6 for failure to make a child support payment. While in jail, Collins was charged with failure to appear on numerous traffic offenses. He appeared in court for those charges May 13 and received a seven-day sentence, with credit for time he had served since May 6. "He was returned to the jail and during the outprocessing, the paperwork to hold him on the child-support failure was overlooked by the jailers," Maj. Sam Pennica, of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, told the Fayetteville Observer last week. Pennica said the mistake was discovered 15 minutes after Collins was released. It was the sixth time since July 2003 that Cumberland County jailers had mistakenly released an inmate. |
