The "New Leash on Life" program allows minimum and medium custody state prisons to partner with local animal shelters and animal welfare agencies to train dogs in preparation for their adoption. 'New Leash' is a community service program, providing an opportunity for prison facilities to team up with local government and nonprofit agencies to give inmates an opportunity to perform community service work while incarcerated. The prisoners learn a joy, compassion and responsibility that come only from raising and training a dog, as well as marketable skills that can help them later find a job. They also learn how to give and receive love and develop a special bond with an animal that would have most likely received a death sentence had it not been for this program and their effort.
