Elkhart County Jail commander takes responsibility for inmate escape |

For the second time in six months an inmate has escaped from the Elkhart County Jail. Thirty-year-old James Edward Williams simply walked away from the jail last Sunday afternoon while performing his kitchen duties. On Sunday, inmates, including Williams, were stacking empty milk crates in an outdoor area. Capt. Rogers says Williams pushed another inmate out of the way and fled the area. Security is supposed to be tight. Last Monday NewsCenter 16 crews observed a police officer guarding inmates but last Sunday it was a civilian kitchen worker who was the supervisor. "With that we are beefing up officer presence when we have inmates outside," said Capt. Rogers. According to Capt. Rogers there was not an officer outside guarding inmates last Sunday. Capt. Rogers was asked if there was supposed to be an officer guarding inmates working outside on Sunday. He replied, "As the jail commander, I made the assumption that there was supposed to be. So basically it comes back to me that I'm the one the responsibility falls on because that assumption was made. I've corrected that and that will no longer be the case." Groundbreaking for the new Elkhart County Jail will take place in September. The new jail will be enclosed facility, which will make security tighter. |
