MAURICE RIVER TOWNSHIP - A New Jersey Department of Corrections van carrying two prisoners flipped over late Thursday morning in Maurice River Township causing serious injuries to one of the two corrections officers riding along.

The van left the Route 55 roadway at about 11:45 a.m. and wound up on its roof, in an apparent one-vehicle accident. Police and rescue personnel responded quickly. The prisoners were transported to South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland with minor injuries.

Millville Rescue Squad Chief John Redden said a corrections officer, identified as Sam Maccarone, was seriously injured in the accident. The man, whose name Redden said he read off of his nametag, suffered likely head injury as well as multiple fractures to one of his arms, Redden said.

Maccarone was driven by ambulance to a safe helicopter landing site nearby and then flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's trauma center at the hospital's city campus, Redden said. He was listed in critical condition, Redden said, though his health status later in the day was unknown.
