| How Can Perdue Delay the Release of Inmates? |

As Govenor Perdue vows to stop next week’s release of 20 violent offenders from prison, tonight the Department of Corrections released the list of the next seven inmates to go free. That list includes the trigger man who killed state Trooper Guy Davis. A court ruling says they’re all supposed to be let go. But the Governor says it isn’t going to happen. At least for now. Perdue says she questions the authority of prison officials to give the inmates credit for good behavior. That’s a big factor in their shorter prison time. The court sided with the inmates on a 1974 law that defined life sentences as 80 years. That law has since been changed. Most of the inmates scheduled for this release are doing time for rape or murder. Only a few would be supervised afterward. So, how can Governor Perdue delay the release? The Department of Corrections tells Nine On Your Side the reason Perdue was able to delay the release was because there never was a court order that said the inmates had to be released on October 29th.
