NEW HORIZONS IN BARBADOS For immediate release (Thursday, October 22, 2009) INTERNATIONAL CORRECTIONS AND PRISONS ASSOCIATON (ICPA) NEW HORIZONS: BARBADOS – OCTOBER 2009 Nearly 300 leaders and participants in corrections and prisons, including many of the world’s leading experts, are gathering in Barbados, with our hosts the Barbados Prison Service, to discuss how to make the difficult practice of corrections more humane and ethical, more efficient, and therefore more effective worldwide. With around nine million people in prisons and millions more on community penalties worldwide, this often forgotten sector consumes huge amounts of taxpayer’s money. Like other sectors, corrections needs to improve the contribution it can make to public safety by being targeted intelligently not indiscriminatingly, essentially by turning people around. Sharing experiences of what works best; how best to do it; and how to avoid what does not work, forms the heart of this ICPA conference, the world’s foremost Association for professionals working in corrections. At the opening, the ICPA Executive Director, Ed Wozniak, will recall that the immense scale of incarceration in many jurisdictions is likely to result in more, not less, troubled societies. We need to target corrections more narrowly, thus enabling us to do a better job and thereby improve not diminish public safety. This conference, entitled “New Horizons”, aims to help corrections professionals improve the work they do to reduce crime and contribute to healthier communities. NOTE TO NEWS EDITORS 1. The International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) has as its mission: “To promote and share ethical and effective correctional practices to enhance public safety and healthier communities worldwide.” 2. Formed by the corrections and prisons departments of a number of countries in the 1990’s, the ICPA has developed and expanded into an organization with hundreds of individual members and financial support from over 40 prison services and other institutional members worldwide. 3. The ICPA organizes conferences, workshops, seminars, and other training events, preferably in partnership with other organizations. Meetings in recent years have been held in many locations, including Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Israel, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, South Africa, the USA and now, Barbados. 4. The ICPA produces a newsletter, “Advancing Corrections” and operates a website (www.icpa.ca) containing a forum enabling members to contact each other and share information and best practice.
