CORPUS CHRISTI — Nueces County Jail had more prisoners Monday than it could hold, forcing officials to transfer inmates to other nearby facilities to avoid overcrowding. The jail reached capacity for the first time since it was expanded in 1992, Nueces County Sheriff’s Capt. Abel Carreon said. Sheriff Jim Kaelin said overcrowding has been an issue since he became sheriff in 2006. “Our population has inched upward,” Kaelin said. “It’s finally peaked out.” On Monday morning, the jail had 1,012 inmates in the 1,020-bed facility, Kaelin said. That 99.2 percent level is considered 100 percent because some inmates can’t be housed with others. “We can’t put gang members with opposing gangs,” Kaelin said. “We can’t put a child molester with people who will hurt him. Some people have to be separated. It shouldn’t be a danger for the inmates who are just trying to do their time and get on with life. It becomes a danger when you’re overcrowded.” Read More. |
