Governor Makes Budget Cuts

JEFFERSON CITY- Governor Nixon says more than 600 jobs will be lost statewide.

These jobs come from multiple departments including the Department of Secondary Education, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Department of Corrections. The department losing the most jobs is the Department of Social Services. Some positions being eliminated are currently not filled, other job cuts will require layoffs. Governor Nixon said the decision to cut the jobs is permanent and there are no plans to bring them back in the future.

The state says it hopes some budget cuts won't cause job loss. The state cut $8.8 million dollars from Broadband funding, but says the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act should compensate for this cut.

One area is simply shifting money. The Federal Bonus Funds are rewards from the federal government for a state's food stamp accuracy. The state originally planned to use the bonuses for a new computer system for the Department of Social Services, but the money will now use the money to balance the state budget.
