HAGERSTOWN, MD - Maryland residents can now get notified almost immediately when a prison inmate escapes.

A new technology was put into affect on Wednesday to send notifications for residents in the five surrounding states of Maryland.

Until now, the only alert system was a siren from the 1940s. Many residents, even within a mile of the correctional facilities claimed they often missed the signal.

The new alert system sends text message, email or phone notifications to those who sign up for the service. To sign up, log onto Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services website, at www.dpscs.state.md.us and click the escape alert system link on the right side under "Online Services".
