An inmate who escaped May 10 was captured, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections. Inmate David C. Rowe was captured shortly after 8 a.m., May 13, near Frye Mesa Reservoir on the northeast side of Mount Graham. His capture followed a 24-hour-a-day search operation that took corrections teams and other law enforcement through rugged terrain and over the 10,000-foot mountain. Temperatures at night fell into the teens, reaching 12 degrees on May12. The teams started tracking Rowe after his footprints were spotted just outside the prison perimeter early Monday morning. Rowe, 21, was a low-custody level inmate serving a one-year sentence for aggravated assault, a class 6 felony, at the Fort Grant Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex-Safford. He will be arraigned on charges of escape in Graham County and will then be transferred to a higher custody level facility. Arizona Department of Corrections search teams came from both the Fort Grant Unit and Safford Prison, along with Douglas, Eyman, Florence and Lewis complexes. Other agencies that provided assistance include the Graham County Sheriff's Office, Arizona Department of Public Safety, University of Arizona Police, U.S. Customs, and U.S. Forest Service. The Department's canine units were also utilized. |
