An inmate in the custody of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office walked away from a prison security detail Monday morning, but was caught later walking on the Xavier University campus. The incident is the second escape from the jail within the past 10 days. Two other inmates are still missing after the earlier jailbreak. In the most recent incident, Shawn Francois, 20, an inmate sentenced to community service, walked away from a kitchen detail at the Orleans Parish Security Complex, according to a statement from Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office. The statement did not say how Francois was able to get away from sheriff's deputies or how he escaped the facility. The statement also did not note what time Francois had escaped or how officials became aware of his absence. Gusman's office did not respond to follow-up questions from The Times-Picayune. Francois had been charged with public drunkenness, disturbing the peace and criminal damage to property and was serving a 30-day sentence of community service, the Sheriff's Office said. During his escape, he tried to visit his ailing mother, according to the news release. Read More. |
