After a violent slashing attack on correctional officers, union leaders and a prisoner advocate are blasting the double-bunking of inmates at the state’s maximum security prison. “Souza Baranowski is a nightmare. It’s a powder keg,” said Leslie Walker, executive director of Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services. “The department decided to put the cart before the horse and double-bunk a facility without thorough planning.” One correction officer was slashed in the throat and another sustained a stab wound on his cheek Wednesday night after an inmate became enraged because he was assigned to a double-bunked cell at the Shirley prison, according to Steve Kenneway, president of the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union.
